thea rae - artist & performer
Bio
Thea is a multidisciplinary artist based in Brooklyn, NY. Having grown up all over the East Coast, they studied sculpture as an undergraduate at Smith College and received their Masters from NYU’s ITP. Thea spent their early career in Oakland, California, developing their art and working as a circus performer. They exhibited in solo shows at Basement Gallery in 2010, and Skunk Funk, SF in 2012. Following this, Thea traveled internationally, creating site-specific installations for events and music festivals. In 2018 and 2022, they were given residencies by Wonderfruit in Thailand, culminating in semi-permanent installations currently on display.
Presently, Thea’s work is inspired by the complex web of connections between personal experiences and broader social patterns. From their Brooklyn studio, Thea creates small works: woven tensile light sculptures. In 2024, they were in residence at Brown’s Island. There they created installations on which movement artists researched for their developing web(spider not internet)-based show. Their use of line to create structures coveys their interest in life’s trajectories and invites viewers to consider how social, systemic, and geographical networks can shift them.
